Scholarships for Transfer Students Interested in Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy at Washington State University offers several $1,000 scholarships to outstanding students transferring into the University who demonstrate a serious interest in philosophy and express an intention to pursue philosophy as a major. Such students would most often be entering WSU as juniors, but junior standing is not a requirement.
The award will be spread over a student's first 2 semesters at WSU, with the recipient being required to enroll as a major in philosophy and to make acceptable progress toward graduating with a B.A. in philosophy. After the first semester in residence, the student may apply for one of the regular Potter Scholarships as well, which are available on a year-by-year basis to students already enrolled in the program.
Applicants should arrange admission to WSU through the Office of Admissions and are encouraged to seek further scholarships and financial aid through the Office of Student Affairs.
A complete application includes:
- Application form.
- A personal statement of about 500 words explaining the applicant's academic interests, accomplishments, and goals, with particular focus on the place of philosophy within those interests. This may, but need not, include a discussion of career options.
- Two (2) letters of recommendation from college instructors who know the student's work first-hand. At least one of these must be from an instructor in philosophy; the second may be from some other area in the arts and sciences.
- A complete transcript of course work and grades since high school. (Anyone applying during or after just one year of college-level work should include a high school transcript as well.)
