Fall Picnic — Reaney Park

Each spring and fall semester the department puts on a barbecue or a picnic for the students. We gather for eating, visiting, honoring our graduating seniors, and sometimes play a game or two and give away prizes.

Chess Tournament

Open to WSU majors and minors in philosophy as well as all students in the WSU–UI joint M.A. program. Winner in the student division will be acknowledged on departmental plaque and will play the winner from the faculty division.

  • The tournament will be in single-elimination brackets.
  • If it is necessary to give byes in the first round, they will be awarded based on order of sign-up, so sign up as soon as possible.
  • A win is worth 1 point to the winner. A draw is worth 1/2 point to both players. A loss gets 0 points.
  • The winner of a bracket is the first player to get to 2 or more points with a lead.
  • In each bracket, choice of color for the first game will be awarded by a coin toss or mutual agreement. Subsequent games in that bracket will alternate colors.
  • In each bracket, the players will be responsible for arranging game times. Games can be played in the department library, but can also be arranged for other sites.
  • Failure to show for a scheduled game or unwillingness to schedule games in a timely fashion can result in forfeit. Dr. Shier is the arbitrator.
  • "Touch move" is in effect, but only in the sense that once your hand is removed from a moved piece, the move stands.
