"The Natural History of Poe's Orangutan"

Some scholars have suggested that the imitative and murderous orangutan described in Poe's "Murders in the Rue Morgue" derived from folklore about apes or was the product of Poe's fertile imagination. A careful look at natural history sources available to Poe indicates that several facts about orangutans come from these sources.
