Research Units

Center for Social and Environmental Justice
The center engages community capacities to address poverty, inequality, discrimination, and unequally borne environmental dangers. To eliminate poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation, we must address the intersections of racism, sexism, classism, and heterosexism. The center supports interdisciplinary approaches to positive cultural, political, social, economic, and environmental change.

Division of Governmental Studies and Services
DGSS is an applied social science research unit within the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice Program devoted to the provision of applied research services to federal, state, and local government agencies active in Washington. It promotes this end by involving faculty and graduate students whose interests connect to ongoing DGSS activities. Jointly supported by the College of Liberal Arts and WSU Extension.

Institute for the Study of Intercommunal Conflict
This institute, approved by the WSU Faculty Senate in spring 2007, will be composed of an interdisciplinary team of academicians whose aim is to understand the roots of conflict both between and within communities, to use those insights to promote peace between the relevant parties involved, and in the end advance the security of all.

Plateau Center for American Indian Studies
This center will sponsor research, teaching, and outreach focused on Native American issues. It will operate consistent with the MOU between regional tribes and Washington State University. Its primary focus will be research and service oriented toward the local Plateau peoples and their reservations.

Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service
The Foley Institute fosters civic education, public service, and public policy research in a nonpartisan, cross-disciplinary setting.
