Description of Position

The position is a permanent tenure track Assistant/Associate Professor position in the Department of Anthropology on the Pullman campus of Washington State University, to begin August 16, 2008. The position is a nine month, full time appointment, with a normal teaching load of two courses per semester. Applicants are sought to conduct research and teach in a four sub-field Anthropology program. The position includes research, teaching, and service components. As a member of a Ph.D. granting program at a research university, the faculty member will also be expected to seek external funding for research, conduct research projects, regularly publish research results, and be an active advisor and research mentor for graduate students. Contributions to the departments teaching would ordinarily include Anthropology 101—General Anthropology (a four-field course) and a graduate course. Additional undergraduate and graduate courses would be a part of the teaching load dependent on departmental needs and the interests and specialties of the faculty member. The faculty member will be expected to demonstrate commitment to and success at research and teaching and advising both undergraduate and graduate students. Service to the Department, University, and discipline is also expected. Salaries are competitive at the Assistant Professor level and the initial salary level may be negotiated to take into account the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

Required Qualifications

The following qualifications are required: a Ph.D. in Anthropology completed by July 1, 2008; a specialty in Native American peoples and cultures or Sociocultural Anthropology; and active research and publications.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with: 1) a regional specialty in North America, especially in the Pacific Northwest or Plateau areas; 2) evidence of research excellence; 3) an active area of field research with potential for graduate student involvement; 4) specialties in gender, medical/public health, political economy, natural resources, anthropology of religion, or psychological anthropology; 5) Ability to teach a four-field introductory course, peoples of native North America, and graduate courses/seminars in ethnographic field methods and cultural theory.

Support

The Department of Anthropology at Washington State University supports strong research and teaching programs in archaeology, cultural anthropology, and evolutionary anthropology, offering B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. The Department has extensive and well-equipped teaching and research laboratories. Teaching Assistant support is provided for large undergraduate classes.
